About password reset emails

A password reset email has one job: get a locked-out person back into their account, safely and fast. People open it within seconds of asking for it, often on a phone, often a little stressed.

Our password reset templates keep it short. A clear heading says what the email is. One big button resets the password. A plain line says how long the link works, and a muted note tells people what to do if they did not ask for a reset. Some templates add the device, browser and time of the request, or a one-time login code in a large, easy-to-read box.

Do not add offers or news to this email. Use the same sender name as your app, so people trust it, and keep the link short-lived.

Questions

How long should a reset link stay valid?

Between 15 minutes and 24 hours. Shorter is safer. Say the time limit in the email.

Should I include a login code instead of a link?

Codes work well for apps, where people switch between the email and the app. Use a large, monospace code that is easy to read.

What if the person did not ask for a reset?

Tell them they can ignore the email, and give a link to contact support or secure the account.
